How to brew your coffee with siphon can seem a little tricky, but Coffee Chemist is here to make your brewing journey a little more exciting. Invented in the 19th Century, using a coffee siphon is one of the most excellent ways to brew coffee. Syphons extract the beauty of your coffee beans to the point where it traps the aroma of your choice of beans and leaves you with a flavourful and vibrant cup of coffee by creating a full immersion brew.
What you will need to Follow the Steps on How to Brew Coffee with a Siphon:
- A grinder
- A scale
- A bamboo stirrer or spoon
- A cup or two
- Water (Pre-heated with a kettle or room temperature)
- Fresh Coffee
Place your filter inside the top chamber of your siphon, allowing the chain and hook to run down to the bottom of the funnel.
Secure your filter to the syphon by hooking the chain onto the bottom end of your funnel. This step will keep your ground coffee from ending up in your cup.
Fill up your bottom chamber with warm or room temperature water (depending on how long you plan on entertaining your friends and family) to the number five-cup mark on the siphon.
Start to apply heat by turning up your burner to high and loosely place your funnel inside the bottom.
Start grinding up your coffee to a medium coarseness, similar to the size of table salt, while your water heats up. Use your scale to measure about 40g (6-tbs) of your favourite roasted beans, and experiment a little each time to find the right aroma for you.
Once you’re are done grinding, attach your funnel until it seals to the bottom chamber, and watch the vacuum pressure build-up to the top. Once there is only a small amount of water in the bottom chamber, start creating a bit of a whirl inside the water before adding your ground coffee for full saturation.
For full immersion, add your ground coffee to the water, and start stirring your water and coffee together – and don’t be shy to shake it up as much as you can in that funnel. Lower the heat & wait around 30 seconds and start stirring gently this time to ensure you fully capture the aroma of your beans.
Lose yourself in the science and art of siphon brewing for another 30 seconds and then turn off your heat completely to activate the vacuum suction and watch your coffee become the masterpiece you’ve always wanted to brew up in the comfort of your own home.
Remove your funnel, pour and enjoy!
